Renewable energy credits (RECs)

The generation of renewable power produces both electricity and "Renewable Energy Certificates," or RECs.

RECs, sometimes called "green tags," are a documented record of the generation of environmentally responsible, sustainable electricity. These RECs represent actions taken to reduce the harmful toxins and greenhouse gases created during conventional generation using fossil fuels.

RECs represent the actual generation of environmentally friendly electricity. When you buy EWEB Greenpower, these RECs track your purchase of renewable energy, kilowatt-hour for kilowatt-hour. Renewable energy must be generated to produce a REC, so they represent actual environmentally friendly generation entering the Northwest electric system.
