EWEB has adopted policies that strive to establish a positive environmental legacy for the community we serve and for future generations. We are committed to minimizing our overall impact on the environment while encouraging environmentally responsible behavior within our own operations.
We will identify, measure and understand the direct and indirect impacts of our operations, and develop innovative and realistic solutions for mitigating those impacts. We are committed to communicating regularly on progress in achieving established targets as well as continually improving our environmental programs.
Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs is an overarching premise for any sustainable organization. As part of our commitment to sustainability, EWEB has adopted specific goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) within our own operations, including fuel consumption, energy usage at our facilities, and procurement of goods and services.
Each year, we produce a report measuring our progress toward these targets. In 2014, utility operations contributed about 24,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MT CO2e) to the atmosphere. This is a 14 percent decrease from 2013 levels, and 19 percent lower than 2009 levels. EWEB's fleet made major strides in reducing fossil fuel consumption, and has achieved a 20 percent reduction in GHG emissions since 2009.
The largest single source of emissions continues to be from our supply chain - GHG emissions embodied in purchased goods and services that support our electric and water system.
At the current rate of GHG emission reductions, EWEB would achieve a 21 percent reduction by 2020, short of the 25 percent goal.Climate Change Policy
We have also adopted a zero waste by 2025 goal, which includes:
