Sonya Carlson joined the Eugene Water & Electric Board of Commissioners in January 2017.  She was elected to represent Wards 6 & 7.

After graduating from Lewis and Clark College with a degree in Economics and Public Policy, Sonya worked for nearly a decade in the nonprofit and government sectors. For eight legislative sessions, she served as chief of staff to Representative Phil Barnhart and worked to pass legislation to improve the transparency of tax credits, reviewed the Business Energy Tax Credit and the incentives for residential appliances and electric vehicles. She worked to remove barriers to installing electric vehicle charging stations and advocated for carbon pricing, but is most proud of her work to obtain the $4 million needed to build the Lebanon Veterans Home.

Sonya returned to school at the University of Oregon in 2014 to pursue her master's degree in Business Administration with a concentration in sustainability. During that time, she held fellowships with the Office of Sustainability and the Technology Entrepreneurship Program, where she conducted the Green House Gas inventory for campus, managed the Green Resilient Office program and evaluated the marketability of an energy storage device and water purification system. She also served as a Due Diligence Team Member for the Willamette Angel Conference, and continues to be involved in the burgeoning start-up scene in Eugene. Sonya is currently self-employed as a business analyst.

As a mother, Sonya is deeply committed to building a thriving community for current and future generations and enjoys volunteering to aide local schools and safety net programs. She supports prudent investments in resiliency and wants to be a strong advocate for vulnerable populations and low-income residents. She welcomes feedback and ideas from citizens.
