ENERGY STAR® qualified clothes washers can help you reduce your energy and hot water costs. Many
qualified washers also have a greater capacity than conventional models, meaning fewer loads of laundry.
- Save money
Over the life of your new ENERGY STAR qualified washer, you'll save enough money in
operating costs to pay for the matching dryer.
- Save energy
ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers use about 30% less energy and use over 50% less
water than regular washers
- Protect the environment
Reducing your energy use helps reduce your impact on the environment.

*Modified Energy Factor (MEF) is the energy performance metric for ENERGY STAR qualified
clothes washers. The higher the MEF, the more efficient the clothes washer.
- Purchase a qualifying appliance
- Download and complete the rebate application (fillable PDF)
- Print the completed application, attach a copy of the sales receipt showing the brand name and model of the qualifying appliance,
and send both to EWEB
- EWEB will validate the application and credit your
electric bill for the rebate amount
- Whenever possible, wash only full laundry loads. If your clothes washer has a water level
selector, use the lowest practical level.
- Use cold water when washing clothes. Cold-water detergents can be used for much,
if not all, of your laundry. If you must wash clothes in warm or hot water, rinse them
in cold water. It's a myth that hot water rinses better.
- Use the pre-soak cycle for heavily soiled loads to avoid two washings.
EWEB does not offer a rebate for clothes dryers. The U.S. Department of Energy's Appliance
Standards program conducted a detailed study which found that the clothes dryers on the U.S.
market do not vary significantly from each other in terms of energy consumption. Therefore,
there is not an ENERGY STAR label for clothes dryers.
Even thought a rebate is not available, EWEB encourages you to purchase the highest efficiency makes
and models, and to follow the energy-saving tips below:
- Use the moisture sensor option, which automatically shuts off the machine when the clothes are dry.
- Choose a high spin speed or extended spin option on your clothes washer to minimize the
moisture in your clothes before you transfer them to the dryer.
- Air dry clothes whenever possible.
