Solar water heaters
Hands under a running faucet

Water heating typically accounts for 25-35% of home energy costs. A solar water heater can reduce these costs substantially by using sunshine — a free and renewable fuel source — to provide hot water.

Customer benefits
  • Save energy and use a renewable resource
  • Reduce monthly electric bills
  • Help the environment by reducing carbon dioxide output
  • Increase property value
Program requirements
  • Must be an EWEB electric customer
  • Must own the home or rental property, or be the owner’s legally assigned representative
  • Rental property owners must complete a W-9 form
  • Current water heater (or pool heater) must be electric
How it works

The system typically includes two main components — a collector and a storage tank for solar-heated water.

The collector is usually mounted on a roof. It gathers the sun's energy and transfers the heat to a fluid. The fluid's heat is then transferred to water stored in the tank. The preheated water flows into your home's standard water heater.

Incentives
  • Cash discounts of $500 for domestic water heaters and pool heaters
  • Zero-interest loans for domestic water heaters and pool heaters of up to $7,000, with maximum 60-month term

If you replace your standard electric water heater as part of the project, consider purchasing one included on EWEB's list of energy-efficient electric water heaters to qualify for a $25 to $50 rebate.

Tax credits

In addition to EWEB's incentives, you may also be eligible for:

Program steps
  • Confirm that you meet the program requirements.
  • Contact one or more of EWEB's solar water heater program participating contractors.
  • The contractor will determine if your home meets the minimum solar access and collector siting/orientation standards.
  • The contractor will provide program and product information and, if applicable, a loan application.
  • The contractor will provide you with a written proposal. The proposal will indicate EWEB’s cash discount subtracted from the total sales price.
  • Decide which system to purchase.
  • If applying for a loan, complete the loan application. When your loan is approved, you can arrange for the contractor to install the system.
  • EWEB inspects the system after installation.
  • The cash discount and/or loan is paid when the system passes inspection.
Find a contractor

The effectiveness of a solar water heater depends on proper installation. Therefore, EWEB provides financial incentives only when a qualifying system is installed by a participating contractor included on this list.
