May 20, 2011 Water pipe work will cause traffic delays on Oakway and West 10th Ave.Eugene Water & Electric Board construction crews will close access to northbound Oakway Road at the intersection of Coburg Road and Oakway beginning at 9 p.m. Sunday, May 22. This final phase of the Coburg water main replacement project will require drivers seeking to access northbound Oakway Road to use Oakmont Way as a detour. The Oakway closure will affect the two northbound Coburg Road left turn lanes, so drivers will have continue north on Coburg to Oakmont. Motorists on southbound Coburg seeking to turn right onto northbound Oakway should also use the Oakmont detour as the right turn lane off of Coburg will be closed during the work. Vehicles that take the Coburg Road exit off of westbound I-105 that want to access northbound Oakway should also use the Oakmont detour. The work will run from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday night through Thursday morning. EWEB scheduled to work at night to minimize traffic congestion. The $1.2 million water main replacement project started in early February, and runs under Coburg Road from the P.F. Chang’s restaurant north to Harlow Road. The project replaced an aging and brittle 8-inch concrete water main installed in the 1950s with a more durable 10-inch ductile iron pipe. Most of the work should be done by May 27. The city of Eugene in early June will begin a major repaving project on Coburg from Oakway Road north past Harlow Road. On Monday, May 23, EWEB crews will begin replacing the water mains at the intersection of West 10th Avenue and Washington Street. The project will require closing West 10th between Washington and Jefferson to through traffic in both directions. One lane of Washington will be closed in the work area during the project. Once crews finish that segment of the project, they will move to the intersection of West 10th and Jefferson, which will require the closure of one lane on Jefferson in the work area. Crews will work 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday through June 6. EWEB is in the fourth year of a major capital improvement program to replace aging infrastructure such as water mains and distribution lines. See EWEB's construction project updates
