Water main replacement project will close sections of High and Broadway over the weekend

Eugene Water & Electric Board crews will close sections of High Street and East Broadway on Saturday and Sunday as part of an ongoing water main replacement project.

The closures, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, will affect High from 10th Avenue north to Eighth Avenue, and Broadway from Pearl Street east to Mill Street.

The project, which started on Feb. 19, includes replacing about 550 feet of 12-inch steel pipe with more durable ductile iron pipe. Motorists and cyclists should be prepared to detour around the closure area. The crews will use flaggers and traffic cones to delineate the work zone.

The weekend work will allow crews to efficiently replace the old steel water mains running under High and Broadway without interfering with busier weekday traffic. As the project continues next week, motorists can expect periodic, single-lane closures on High and Broadway between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Delays will be minimal.

A second water main replacement project on High between 11th and 13th avenues will follow in mid-February. Both projects are being completed ahead of a city of Eugene resurfacing project planned for High Street this summer.

The replacement of the water mains, some of which are more than 50 years old, is part of EWEB’s 10-year, $130 million water system capital improvement plan. Over the next eight years, EWEB crews will make a series of capital improvements to the city’s water system to ensure reliable service and the delivery of high quality water.
