July 16, 2009 EWEB offering four scholarships for utility-related careersThe Eugene Water & Electric Board will offer four scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year to support students planning a career in the utility industry. With many in the “baby boom” generation planning to retire in the next five to 10 years, EWEB and other utilities are working to interest and support students of today who are considering becoming utility professionals of the future. “It’s integral for EWEB to make sure our future work force is prepared and ready to lead the utility going forward,” said Rob Kalkofen, an EWEB recruiter. “We want to create learning opportunities so people want to come in and be part of this utility.” EWEB will provide two $1,250 scholarships for university students in their junior or senior year of studying for a degree related to the utility field – ranging from accounting and administration to engineering and power operation management. For those considering a career in the utility trades such as an electric line technician, energy management specialist or various water treatment plant jobs, there are two utility school scholarships of $1,250 each for qualifying students. In general, the students seeking a utility school scholarship must be in good standing and attending courses at Lane Community College’s energy management or renewable energy technology programs; Linn-Benton Community College’s water/wastewater technology program; Northwest Lineman College; or the Vocation Outside Line Training Academy at Camp Rilea. Other programs will be considered by the selection committee. In addition to the scholarships, EWEB administers a robust internship program for high school, college and trade school students and community members. This summer, EWEB has a record 32 interns working in all facets of the utility. All but two of the internships are paid. Application deadline for scholarships is Sept. 1, 2009.
