EWEB Solar Challenge celebrates 10th anniversary

Local middle-schoolers will test their knowledge of solar energy and electric vehicles when they compete Saturday, June 9, in the 10th annual EWEB Solar Challenge.

The event features student-built model cars, powered by the sun and judged for design and speed.

More than 500 students from middle schools in the Eugene, Bethel, Springfield and other area school districts are expected to attend this year’s Solar Challenge, which will take place at Monroe Middle School, 2800 Bailey Lane.

If the sun shines, the event will be held in the parking lot. The rainout location is the Monroe gymnasium. Racing begins at 10 a.m. and concludes around 2:30 p.m. with an awards ceremony. Students will break for a 20-minute lunch around noon.

The competition is an opportunity for local sixth, seventh and eighth grade science students to test their scientific know-how, creative thinking, experimentation and teamwork. All students use a standardized solar electric panel and motor components, but unlimited ingenuity and inventiveness are encouraged in car construction.

Each year, middle school students learn about electric energy and solar-powered vehicles through an in-depth science curriculum funded and sponsored by EWEB. The Solar Challenge is the culmination of the program.
