Volunteers, EWEB to plant trees at Madison Meadow

The Eugene Water & Electric Board will help plant several “power friendly” trees on Saturday (April 7) at Madison Meadow in southwest Eugene.

EWEB is donating the trees as part of its “Right Tree, Right Place” campaign to encourage the planting of species that don’t conflict with power lines and to help beautify the community during Arbor Week, which in Oregon is the first full week in April.

Volunteers are invited to gather at 11 a.m. in the two acres of land at Madison Street and West 22nd Avenue to help EWEB and Madison Meadow neighbors plant the trees and shrubs.

“Each year during Arbor Week, we like to help beautify a part of our community by donating and planting trees at schools or natural areas,” said Ron Dyer, EWEB’s arborist. “At the same time, we want to encourage people to plant species that are appropriate and safe for under or near power lines.”

Neighbors living near the undeveloped parcel along West 22nd Avenue are working to purchase and preserve the land as open space.

“This natural open space will be a priceless for future generations, and EWEB’s gift of trees and shrubs along 22nd will create a beautiful transition to the meadow,” said Madison Meadow board member Linda Prier.

National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April, but each state chooses its own day or week.
