Work begins on City View water reservoir

The Eugene Water & Electric Board has started a major renovation of a water reservoir in the southwest hills.

The 1.75-million-gallon reservoir, along West 29th Avenue near City View, will be off-line until May 2007, when EWEB is scheduled to complete the work. Other nearby reservoirs will supply water to City View-area residents while the work is being done.

It is one of a handful of smaller reservoirs that will be rebuilt or reconstructed over the next 10 years as part of a stepped-up effort by EWEB to increase the maintenance and reliability of the water system. A recent CH2M Hill report identified the City View reservoir as the EWEB reservoir most in need of reconstruction.

The $1.2 million project will replace the wire that is wound around the reservoir as a structural component with newer and stronger galvanized wire. The reservoir also will be brought up to current earthquake standards, and it will be retrofitted with a new inlet-outlet system to increase the “mixing” of water in the reservoir to improve water quality.

Construction may create some traffic delays and increased noise in the neighborhood during weekday working hours. The work also will require significant vegetation removal and excavation of the soil around the upper portion of the reservoir.
