EWEB commissioners lower electric rates againThe Eugene Water & Electric Board has lowered electric rates for the second time this year. An overall rate decrease of about 2.5 percent, adopted by EWEB's elected board of commissioners on Oct. 4, will take effect in November. Residential customers will see a reduction in rates of approximately 2 percent, or about $2 less per month for a customer using an average of 1,250 kilowatt-hours of electricity. Customers using more electricity in the colder winter months will see a larger dollar reduction in their bills, depending on their usage. The EWEB electric rate reduction comes at a time when natural gas, home heating oil and gasoline prices are soaring, as well as at the start of the home heating season in the Northwest, when usage generally increases. The rate reduction is the result of lower Bonneville Power Administration wholesale energy costs. The BPA supplies EWEB with about 70 percent of the electricity it needs for 83,000 electric customers in Eugene. The Eugene utility's elected board of commissioners has adopted a general policy of passing through any decrease or increase in BPA costs to customers. It is the second rate decrease this year. In May, EWEB commissioners lowered rates by 1.6 percent, following another reduction in BPA power costs. Learn more about the rate decrease-- end -- |
