EWEB offers water-saving tips during hot weather
With temperatures forecast into the 90s, the Eugene Water
& Electric Board reminds customers to use water wisely and efficiently
when watering outdoor landscapes.
Slowing the flow of water can keep a lid on monthly water
bills and avoids high "peak" demands that can tax EWEB's water
system.
Here are a few tips to help cut down on water use during
the summer:
·Water
early in the morning or later at night to reduce evaporation.
·Just
because it is hot doesn't mean you have to water more often. Check the
soil with a trowel or probe before you decide to water. (Plants also
naturally wilt during the hot hours of the day but perk up once it cools
in the evening).
·Follow
weekly "ET" watering guidelines, published in each Saturday's
Register-Guard, on www.eweb.org or xby
calling 485-2000, Ext. 3932.
·Use
timers to avoid overwatering your yard and garden.
·Avoid
long, hot showers (less than 10 minutes).
·Wait
until your dishwasher is full before starting.
·Mulch
plants to retain moisture in the root zone.
·Consider
soaker hoses or a drip irrigation system for your vegetable garden,
shrubs and flower beds.
·Aerate
your lawn and use the proper amounts of fertilizer. This promotes deep
roots for weathering hot xspells.
·Plant
native or water-wise species.
·Look
for sprinkler, hose or faucet leaks and fix them.
