CREWS BEGIN HANGING FIBER OPTIC CABLE FOR EWEB'S INFORMATION NETWORK

Monday marks the first day that crews will "pull glass" -- or hang fiber optic cable -- for Eugene Water & Electric Board's broadband telecommunications network. Work on the network has been underway for months now and the installation of the fiber marks a significant step towards completion of the project.

So far this summer, contractors for EWEB have hung approximately 40 miles of yellow "pull" rope in preparation for the fiber optic cable. At the same time, the crews have installed pole attachments and brackets to accommodate the cable.

All fiber optic cable should be in place by the end of October and from there, crews will focus on the installation and testing of the electronics that send and receive data, video and text using light waves. The network will be complete at the end of January 2000.

The fiber optic network will initially be used to operate EWEB's electric system more efficiently. However, this new network is expected to eventually encompass every Eugene home and business in a web that will offer fiber optic capacity and speed to all EWEB customers.
