KIDS PUT SCIENCE LESSONS TO WORK AT SECOND ANNUAL EWEB SOLAR CHALLENGE -- SATURDAY, JUNE 5

Local middle-schoolers will put their newly acquired knowledge of solar energy to the test when they compete on Saturday, June 5 in Eugene Water & Electric Board's Solar Challenge. The EWEB Solar Challenge features student-built model cars, powered by the sun and judged for design and speed.

The event takes place in the Midgely Building parking lot at the corner of High Street and Fourth Avenue. If rain is forecasted, the EWEB Solar Challenge will be held in the Monroe Middle School gymnasium. Racing begins at 11 a.m. and concludes at 2 p.m. with an awards ceremony.

This competition is an opportunity for local sixth, seventh and eighth grade science students to use scientific know-how, creative thinking, experimentation and teamwork. All participants will use a standardized solar cell and motor, but unlimited ingenuity and inventiveness are encouraged in car construction.

Students have been learning about electric and solar electric powered vehicles through a science curriculum sponsored by EWEB.
