CITIZEN GROUP TO EMERGE WITH RECOMMENDATIONS ON WATER SUPPLY AT OPEN HOUSE ON TUESDAY, JUNE 30

After more than a year of evaluation and deliberation, a Eugene Water & Electric Board-sponsored citizen group is ready to unveil its plans to ensure adequate drinking water far into the next century.

The group will present its recommendations to the community at an Open House on Tuesday, June 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the EWEB lobby at 500 E. 4th Avenue. The evening will include time for one-on-one discussions, a presentation of the recommendations and a question-and-answer session.

The citizen group hopes to hear what the community thinks about the group's recommendations. "We'll be considering everyone's comments before we make the final recommendations to the EWEB Board of Commissioners later in July," says Grant Spies, spokesperson for the citizen group.

The issue of water supply revolves primarily around two- to three-day hot stretches during the summer, when heavy outdoor water use can spike demand close to the 72 million gallon per day capacity of EWEB's Hayden Bridge Filtration Plant. To date, water demand was highest on July 11, 1994, when Hayden Bridge pumped 68 million gallons to customers.

Tuesday's Open House is the third and final event the citizen group will hold in its efforts to check in with the community periodically. The group will take its final recommendations to the Board on July 21.
