EWEB offers refrigerator/freezer recycling program

The Eugene Water & Electric Board is introducing a refrigerator and freezer recycling program to customers who are ready to say goodbye to their older, inefficient units and earn a $30 cash incentive.

The new program is offered through a partnership with JACO Environmental, a regional appliance recycling company. EWEB customers can schedule a free pick up for their old, operating refrigerator or freezer by calling JACO toll-free at (866) 444-8907 or visiting www.jacoinc.net. The customer will receive their $30 incentive within approximately two weeks of the pick-up

“Many people don’t realize how much energy their older appliances are using,” said EWEB Energy Specialist Colleen Wedin. “By recycling rarely-used second refrigerators or older units that have been replaced with new, energy efficient models, customers can save energy, reduce their electric bills and also benefit the environment.”

JACO safely captures and destroys all of the toxins and ozone-destroying chemicals found in the older appliances and recycles more than 97 percent of the materials.

Wedin continues, “EWEB hopes to see as many as 1,500 units recycled annually, which would result in more than 1.3 million kilowatt hours of energy savings.”

Both refrigerators and freezers are eligible and must be 10 to 30 cubic feet in size, empty and working at the time of pick up. The program is available to residential customers who receive their electricity from EWEB. There is a limit of two appliances per account and Energy Star-labeled models are not eligible.
