May 14, 2008 EWEB holds first-annual high school career fairNearly 80 high school students from across Lane County will experience a day-in-the-life of an EWEB trade worker at the Eugene Water & Electric Board’s first-annual high school career fair on Friday, May 16. The hands-on event is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at EWEB’s Hayden Bridge Water Filtration Plant. “Over the next few years, we’ll (EWEB) see a lot of job openings as the older generation begins to retire,” says Lonny Sayles, EWEB water treatment plant operator. “The career fair is an opportunity for students to learn that there are a lot of good jobs working in the utility trade industry and to experience those jobs first-hand.” Students will tour the Hayden Bridge facility, operate heavy equipment, participate in the drinking water treatment process, climb power poles and learn about exciting career opportunities in the utility trade industry. Through a partnership with Lane Education Service District, students from the following schools will attend: Crow High School, Willamette High School, West Lane Technical Learning Center, the Department of Youth Services, Churchill High School, Cottage Grove High School, Springfield High School and Thurston High School. Note to editors and reporters: The Hayden Bridge water-treatment facility is located at 3957 Hayden Bridge Road, in Springfield. From Eugene, travel east on I-105 and take the 42nd Street exit. Go left on 42nd, right onto Marcola Road, then left onto Hayden Bridge Road. The entrance to the facility is on the left. For access into the Hayden Bridge Filtration Plant, press the button on the white pedestal at the lower gate entrance.
