Carmen-Smith Relicensing Project

Carmen-Smith Hydroelectric Project

For nearly 45 years, the Carmen-Smith Hydroelectric Project on the Upper McKenzie River has served EWEB customers with low-cost and abundant electricity. Built in the early 1960s, Carmen-Smith is EWEB’s largest utility-owned power source, generating enough power to supply 16,000 homes with electricity.

But in 2008, Carmen-Smith’s 50-year federal license will expire. EWEB is in the process of submitting a new long-term license application to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for approval.

As a public utility owned and governed by the citizens of Eugene, EWEB's goal is to keep you informed about the relicensing effort and to provide you with access to important public documents:

“Carmen-Smith is a very valuable asset owned by the citizens of Eugene, and we believe it is important to keep it in public hands and operate it for the benefit of EWEB’s citizen-owners and customers.”

Randy Berggren,
EWEB General Manager
