Our energy future
Most of this electricity comes from the federal Bonneville Power Administration and from EWEB’s own hydroelectric projects. EWEB also has been at the forefront of renewable energy resource development: We were the first public utility in Oregon to own a wind farm, and we have contracts to purchase a substantial amount of wind and geothermal power generated here in the Northwest. By 2009, EWEB’s commitment to wind, biomass, geothermal, solar and other renewable power resources will equal about 10 percent of Eugene’s daily electricity needs, far ahead of renewable energy targets established by the Oregon Legislature. Acquiring renewable power is the result of a careful planning process used by EWEB for the past 25 years to determine what energy resources it will need in the future. This Integrated Electric Resource Plan is updated every few years with the help of citizens. This plan sets two priorities: Continue an aggressive energy conservation effort, then acquire renewable power to meet any increase in demand that cannot be offset by conservation efforts.
